Privacy Statement
It is the policy of the Palliser Regional Library Board to ensure the privacy of its library users and to consider any library records to be confidential in nature.
Information that Palliser Regional Library Collects
Palliser Regional Library collects personal information directly from you at the time of registration or card renewal. Information that is collected about you and/or your reading habits is confidential. Your Internet usage is confidential unless the library equipment is used for illegal, actionable or criminal purposes such as harassment, libel, slander, stalking, promotion of terrorism or racism, the display of hate literature, child pornography, illicit drug literature, or obscene material.
How the Library Protects Your Information
As per the 1996 Saskatchewan Public Libraries Act, Section 76: Confidential Records:
"No librarian or other employee of a public library shall disclose any information concerning any patron, or patron record, of the public library obtained in the course of performing his or her duties, except:
- for the purposes for which the information was provided or obtained; or
- with the consent of the patron."
Library records will be disclosed only on a court order or if subpoenas are given under the authority of federal, provincial or local law.
How the Library Uses Your Information
Library records are maintained for the sole purpose of ensuring the safe and timely return of library materials, monitoring usage of library material types, and maintaining standard library statistics. Library records are not used directly or indirectly to identify the types of materials used by individuals or the names of individuals using the library.
Palliser Regional Library may disclose personal information without an individual's knowledge or consent:
- to a lawyer representing the Library;
- to the Collection Agency for purposes of the collection of sums owed to the Library; or
- to comply with a subpoena, warrant or an order made by a court or an investigative body named in the Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Regulations.
How the Library Disposes of your Information
With the exception of materials that have gone to the status of damaged, claims returned, overdue or lost, materials checked-in are automatically removed from your patron file.
Printed records of the Internet History files and the Sign-In Sheet that were recorded or stored in the usual and ordinary course of business will be destroyed by either manual or machine shredding, after 90 days unless it is deemed required for use in an official action.
If you have any questions or concerns about our Privacy Policy, please contact us.
