OPEN ACCESS POLICY
All people have the fundamental right to have access to all expressions of knowledge, creativity and intellectual activity and to express their thoughts publicly. In support of this right, the Palliser Regional Library has adopted a policy outlining the Intellectual Rights of the Individual.
- The Public Library’s mandate is to provide all types of informational and recreational material for all segments of the community.
- It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to censor or prohibit certain material to their children if they so wish. It is not the library’s responsibility. Parents or guardians must also take responsibility for the type of materials borrowed by their children.
- Except as prohibited by law:
- All library materials, and all materials accessed through the library will be available to all patrons regardless of age.
- Children and young adults will be given equal rights with adults and may borrow all circulation materials.
- The library will not prevent patrons from using any material that they require.
- The library will provide qualified staff to acquire materials and to assist anyone wishing to use those materials.
- Unless material is specifically prohibited by law, it is not ordinarily removed from the library shelves. However,
if an individual strongly objects to a particular item, there is a procedure for him/her to challenge that material. (See Request for Reconsideration of Materials
for particulars.)
