Collection Development
Books
The goal of every library is to build a well-balanced collection which includes something on every topic. However, given the library's resources, the region will provide high-demand, popular items for the rotating collections, and the Moose Jaw Branch, as the resource centre, handles the region's special informational requests.
A large print collection of popular fiction and non-fiction titles is being developed to balance the Provincial collection of juvenile and non-fiction large print materials.
Books in languages other than English are supplied by the Provincial Library and the National Library. Palliser will not normally purchase books in a language other than English except for French juvenile materials for the resource library in recognition of the French immersion programs in Moose Jaw plus French paperbacks for the Willow Bunch and Bushell Park branches.
Paperbacks
A large and current collection of paperbacks is provided because the format appeals to all ages and it is an inexpensive way to supplement the collection. Paperbacks may be bought in bulk, either used or new, without reference to specific criteria although purely sensationalistic or pornographic works will be avoided.
Periodicals
In the fall of each year, local library boards will receive a periodical grant. The Local Library Board in consultation with the Branch Librarian selects the periodicals. Factors considered in choosing periodicals:
- community interests
- accuracy and objectivity of the periodical
- frequency and price
- the balance and variety of the collection
- reading level
- Canadian content
Pamphlets
Pamphlets stored in the vertical file collection of each branch provide brief, timely information on popular topics. Materials are provided by Headquarters with relevant items selected by the Branch Librarian.
Audio-cassettes
Each branch has a collection of cassettes to attract non-readers or infrequent users to the library. These collections consist of children's stories and music, rock music, country and western music and popular music including instrumental, sacred, and easy listening.
Films
A small collection of 16 mm children's films is maintained at the Moose Jaw Branch to meet high demand items during peak periods such as Christmas and summer time.
Video cassettes
Educational, instructional, documentary and children's video cassettes in VHS format are purchased to attract non-readers to the library and to supplement the library’s print collection.
